Receiving Actuarially Reduced Early Retirement Benefit

There is a lot of confusion centred around the qualification and capital value reduction associated with receiving early retirement benefits from the NHS Pension Scheme. Please read this article if your feel you might want to take your benefits early.

The earliest age at which you are able to withdraw your pension benefits under Actuarially Reduced Early Retirement (ARER) is known as the minimum pension age.

If you joined the 1995 Section NHS Pension Scheme before 6th April 2006 you are entitled to receive an Actuarially Reduced Early Retirement from the age of 50. Your pension and pension commencement lump sum will be reduced due to your early retirement however your dependants will still receive any benefits they are entitled to in full.

If you joined the 1995 Section on or after 6th April 2006, your minimum pension age was increased to 55 on 6th April 2010.

If you left the scheme before 31 March 2000, the option of receiving early retirement benefits will not be available to you unless you return to the scheme.

The following table shows approximately how much your pension and lump sum is reduced by if you choose to retire early in the 1995 Section of the scheme.
